Delhi was on high alert today as the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) called for a "gherao" protest against the arrest of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. Security was significantly bolstered around Prime Minister Narendra Modi's residence and various other areas across the national capital, confirmed a top official on Tuesday.

Arvind Kejriwal's Arrest and Allegations

The unrest stems from Arvind Kejriwal's recent arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on March 21 in connection with a money-laundering investigation related to the defunct excise policy. Kejriwal, the AAP national convenor, is accused of soliciting kickbacks from liquor traders for favorable treatment during his tenure. The ED alleges Kejriwal was a central figure in implementing the policy, working in cahoots with other AAP leaders and individuals.

Delhi BJP's Counter-Protest and Detentions

In response to AAP's demonstration, the Delhi BJP organized a counter-protest demanding Kejriwal's resignation as chief minister. Led by Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva, the party's march from Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium to Delhi Secretariat via ITO was met with resistance from authorities. Sachdeva and other BJP leaders were detained during the protest.

Traffic Disruptions and Special Arrangements

The escalating tensions led to traffic disruptions in central Delhi, prompting Delhi Traffic Police to implement special arrangements. Vehicles were restricted from parking on Tughlaq Road, Safdarjung Road, and Kemal Ataturk Marg. Additionally, water cannons were deployed by police forces to control the situation as BJP workers attempted to breach barricades near the Secretariat.

AAP leaders vowed to continue their protests, with plans to march to Ramlila Maidan on March 31. The Delhi High Court is set to hear Arvind Kejriwal's plea against his arrest by the ED on Wednesday.
